Self-Tapping vs Self-Drilling Screws: The Unknown Differences

 During the construction of a building, people become picky about the iron bars they use. It is ironic how the most critical hardware piece that is responsible for holding the whole structure together is often the most neglected among all the other materials.

Within this list, there are two types of screws called self tapping screws and self drilling screws. These two screws are usually mistaken for each other. However, some characteristics make them unique. 


What Are Self Tapping Screws?




Self tapping screws are also called sheet metal screws due to their heavy use in the sheet metal trade. It contains form mating threads that can be 'tapped' in a pre-drilled hole. Thus by creating their own threads, self-tapping screws do not require matching female threads like in nuts from a nut/bolt set or machine screws. Due to their threading functions, they may also be known as self-thread screw.


What Are Self Drilling Screws?


Self drilling screws can be classified as a kind of self tapping screws. These, too, have the property of threading on their own. However, one key difference that makes it self drilling is - it features a drill point. The sharp drill point helps drill a hole and thread simultaneously. A self drilling screw is only different from a self tapping screw when it drills its hole. Self-drillers are also called 'Tek' screws, a proprietary brand name associated with their unique shape and function.


Self Tapping Screw VS Self Drilling Screw 


  • As mentioned earlier, one of the key differences between the two is the presence of a pre-drilled hole. Screws with sharp threads that can carve into materials are known as self-drilling screws. Self tapping screws on the other hand need an initial hole that is pre drilled


  • Self-tapping screws are used to secure thinner sheet metals and other substrates that cut their threads. Self-drilling screws are used in thicker metal gauges where it can be used to self-drill and doesn't require any pre-drilling.


  • Self-tapping screws are usually prefered when it comes to working with materials like ply and timber.


  • Self-drilling screws are the go to screws for cladding and metal roofing.

Self tapping screws are usually used in-


  • Securing metal gauges which are 1-2 sheets thin

  • Screwing into plastic housings

  • Fixing metal brackets into ply and timber


Self drilling screws are used- 


  • For cladding and metal roofing purposes 

  • When working with HVAC – duct, clips and brackets

  • In the construction of carports/ sheds/ garages

  • Day to day construction

  • In the building of steel framing
